5A- Identifying Local Opportunities

  1.  Mom fails to meet deadline to bring missing kids to Idaho

·       A mother and her new husband lied to the police about where their children were after the mothers ex-husband was murdered by her brother and the new husbands ex-wife died of natural causes. These two children have been missing since September of 2019 and the mother still has not told the police where they are located.
·       The problem is that the police do not know where these children are because the mother is lying to them about their whereabouts.
·       The police department has this problem.
2. LA fire revives push for sprinklers in older high-rises

·      Landlords of older buildings have not installed sprinkler systems in their buildings. A fire broke out in one of these buildings and destroyed many apartments as there was no sprinkler system to stop it. Tenants are demanding to have sprinkler systems set up in their building and are filing a class-action lawsuit against the landlord.

·      The problem is that landlords aren’t spending much on maintenance of older buildings, including sprinkler systems.

·      The tenants of the apartments of older buildings have this problem.

3. Florida Legislature going to the dogs (and cats)

·      Florida lawmakers are creating bills to protect shelter and rescued pets. They are putting these pets alongside manatees, alligators, and the Florida panther as protected animals.
·      The problem is that these sheltered and rescued animals are being treated like objects and not living and breathing mammals.
·      The animals and the people that own the shelters have this problem.

4. State unemployment rate hits record low
·      The unemployment rate in Florida has dropped to 3% which is the lowest mark since the estimating started in 1976. Department of Economic Opportunity Executive Director Ken Lawson says it is partly because of policies that encourage businesses to invest in the state.
·      The problem is that the unemployment rate is at a record low.
·      The citizens that live in Florida have this problem.

5. US advises against travel to China; virus declared emergency
·      The United States has advised everyone against travelling to China since the World Health Organization has declared there to be an outbreak of the corona virus in China. There has been more than 213 deaths in China alone.
·      The problem is that people cannot travel to China because of the outbreak and can risk getting a deadly disease.
·      The people of the US and China have this problem

  1. Hi Erika, while unemployment is usually a very bad thing this can be an opportunity for employers to hire more people at a cheap wage. I think the story about the LA fires is interesting too. California is in a drought, this gives the opportunity for someone to develop an efficient system to get them out of this problem.

  2. Hey Erika,
the article about the children and their dead father shocked me It's so horrible that things like that happen in this world, and the children won’t be able to grow up normal Every time I read something like that, I'm thankful for the way I grew up. Often times we forget how good our life is. I hope the things that happened won’t affect the upbringing of the children.
